Classes!  Yes Please!
No I don’t mean go enroll in an acting class.  Once your child is 5-8 years old and is on his or her way to doing this for the long haul yes, it’s a great idea.  But for now just enroll in classes of interest or fun.  Ballet, Gymnastics, Sports, even Mommy and me classes are perfect!  What we want to do is to develop good skills for playing with other children, good team work skills, and good listening to adult skills.  Remember anything they learn is one more skill for their resume.

Teach your child songs and rhymes!

Let your child order their food when dining out. Give them as many chances as possible to talk to adults. Verbal skills are very important!

Things to Practice at Home

Find the X...
Make a tape X on the floor, teach your child to go to the X. When they get good at finding then standing on the X teach them to say their name, and age. “Hi, I’m Shelby, and I am two years old!”
Show them a profile, turn to one side, than the other. TONS OF PRAISE for a job well done. Make sure this is FUN! Lots of clapping and happy playful attention.

Repeat this...
Take a line or phrase, and teach them to learn and repeat it.  You can do this with things you hear on commercials.  Play with simple jingles like “hey I’m lovin’ it” from McD’s.  As the get older you can turn this into a car game too!  Mom or Dad names the jingle, and we see who can guess what ad it is for.  Let you child see if she can name a jingle.

Make up stories...
Keep them thinking fast by starting a story and letting them tell a sentence, okay your turn.  Go back and forth.  This will build their listening and their improv skills..

Pretend...
Another fun car game is pretend. Tell them something like I’m in an airplane what do I see, what do you see, how does it feel, smell, react to where you are. You can be on the beach, in a park, a plane, space ship, zoo, any place will work.
It’s good for the imagination and the improv skills.

More Pretend (even for babies)
Say things to your little one like, “I’m asleep.”  pretend to be asleep.  Let them copy you
“That’s funny I’m laughing”  laugh
“I’m so sad”
“I’m sleepy”
“achooo!”
“cough”
“my tummy hurts”
“I’m so happy”
